Plants and what to do with them – Dev Blog 94

Plants (like all resources) – are incredibly important in Fringe Planet. This week I’ll be taking a look at the various plants you will discover in the game. Plants can be harvested or chopped down. When a plant is harvested it will drop a set amount of components (be it fruit or shavings) depending on how grown it is. When a plant is chopped down, it will also drop a seed, which can be used to move the plant to a more convenient location.

Cherry Bush

Cherry Bush

The cherry bush grows during the day and will drop multiple cherries when harvested – tasty small snacks, so you will need a lot of them to fill up a peon. A peon can also (if there is no food in storage) go and eat raw cherries straight from the bush. This will give a peon a negative thought – all peons prefer their food well prepared (read more about meal preparation and cooking).

Plyme Fruit

Plyme Fruit

Plyme Fruits grow slowly during the day, but will produce a large fruit which will provide a satisfying meal for a peon. It’s a bit bland tasting alas, so you’ll need to add extra things to meal to create something tasty for the peons to enjoy.

Blue Mushroom

Blue mushroomA blue mushroom contains many portions of mushroom flesh, a large and relatively tasty ingredient. They grown in the dark (at night or if there are voxels above them). It’s incredibly important to cook the mushroom flesh, otherwise the peons run the risk of becoming ill. But if there are no prepared meals, a peon will eat raw mushroom flesh. Probably best to avoid that scenario though. When harvesting a mushroom, unlike other plants, it will be destroyed and will drop a spore, which will need re-planting to grow again.

Blood Fruit

Blood Fruit

The blood fruit only ever grows one fruit, but it is an incredibly tasty and fleshy fruit. Delicious to all who eat it. The strange thing about the blood fruit is that it only ever grows at night, or in dark places. A single blood fruit is enough for a meal by itself, though other ingredients may make it even tastier.

Fiber Plant

Fiber Plant

This one isn’t for eating. During the day it grows plant fiber strands, which peons can harvest. These strands can then be refined and turned into clothes. This is incredibly handy due to the way all clothes will decay over time and you can read more about clothes wearing out.

Barrel Root

Barrel Root

Barrel Root erupts from the ground and grows rapidly at all times. Shaving the barrel root gives barrel root shavings, which can be added to any meal to enhance it. The shavings are also used in the manufacture of certain machines.  It’s a tough and hardy plant.

Trees

Trees are dotted around the landscape of Fringe Planet. They are actually an incredibly important resource, as you will be using a lot of wood to build furniture, machines and buildings. They grow slowly over time and will drop multiple bits of wood when they are chopped down.
